The Club Today
At present Higginshaw ARLFC has over 100 playing members, which are devised from three separate squads that are made up of one senior and two youth sides. In 2008 the club purchased the building which was previously known as St Stephen's Sports and Social Club, providing us with an official clubhouse. This facility is regularly used by our local community, with various individuals, groups and organisations capitalising on are welcoming venue. However, major improvements are required to this building. As a result of this we have partnered with SNAP to showcase a wide range of sponsorship opportunities that will facilitate business engagement and raise the necessary funding to complete these projects.
Aspirations
We have been somewhat of a nomadic club for many years and at times our prospects have looked bleak. Traditionally this was how all amateur rugby league clubs operated. However, over the past two decades amateur clubs have had to become more organised through their financial structures. Those which survive need strong leadership, progressive youth policies and a permanent base to operate from. These are the three core attributes that we value most about our club. Furthermore, we have recently registered as a charity to ensure that any income generated through sponsorship will be completely reinvested into the club with no individual profit gain. In addition to this we have introduced new members to our general committee, as well as forming a youth committee, who we hope will lead the club forward to shape our future for the better.
History
Higginshaw ARLFC has immense pride in our history. Junior Rugby League was first played by Higginshaw when the Oldham League was formed in 1896. The successes of our club over the years have never been chronicled, however, the name of Higginshaw ARLFC is covered in glory. We have won League Championships at various levels, appeared in 22 Standard Cup Finals (13 Wins), achieved three Lancashire Cup successes and have reached the first round proper of the Rugby League Challenge Cup on four occasions. Many great names of the past and present have come through the club with Hilton Needham being awarded every honour in the Amateur RL, Tom Jennings and Harry Dyson, who both Captained England as well as the late Fred Howarth a recognised stalwart within rugby league circles.
